Native to southeastern Europe. A rosette of leaves forms the first year and a flowering stalk develops the next season. Tolerates dry conditions. Leaves have been used as a natural dye since prehistoric times. Dye color is much like indigo. Can be invasive. Used medicinally in TCM and European herbalism.
