Native herbaceous perennial that appeals to butterflies. Monarch larvae feed exclusively on milkweed, and are necessary to their life cycle. Native Americans used it for wart removal, and chewed roots to treat dysentery. Crushed milkweed has been used externally to treat skin ulcers, cancers, wound and ringworm. Medicinal uses must be researched carefully due to it’s mild toxicity. Sap can cause allergic reactions. Grows to 5 feet.
