Dwarf Tomatoes
A dwarf heirloom tomato is a type of tomato plant that is smaller than a regular tomato plant. The term “dwarf” refers to the height/size of the plant and not the size of the tomatoes. The mature height of most dwarf tomato plants is 3 to 4 ½ ft. Most of the dwarf tomatoes being bred are indeterminate. However, because of the genetics of the dwarfs, they continue to produce fruits without the plant growing out-of-bounds. The Dwarf Tomato Project is a unique, worldwide, collaborative, all-volunteer tomato breeding project that is bringing great tomatoes to gardeners. The plants that they are breeding, with proper soil and feeding, thrive in containers. The project was conceived in 2005 by Craig LeHoullier and Patrina Nuske Small as a way to create new dwarf tomato varieties that would be available to gardeners around the world. Here are a few of them.
